For years, the automotive industry has been a chessboard where geopolitical strategies and economic policies collide. With the rising tensions between Canada and the U.S., particularly in the realm of electric vehicles (EVs), it’s time to explore a bold, unconventional response. What if Canada decided to counterbalance the American automotive dominance not with retaliatory tariffs or policy shifts, but by embracing a European alternative—Renault’s electric lineup?

Understanding the Political Landscape

Former U.S. President Donald Trump made no secret of his ‘America First’ policies, and should he return to power, it’s likely that protectionist measures will once again shape the industry. Canada, being deeply intertwined with the American automotive supply chain, often finds itself at the mercy of these policy swings. The recent push for EV manufacturing incentives in the U.S. risks sidelining Canadian contributions, favoring domestic production over cross-border collaboration.

But what if Canada took a different approach? Instead of reacting defensively, it could proactively pivot toward an alternative source of EV technology—one that doesn’t rely on American goodwill. Enter Renault, a European automaker with a well-established electric vehicle presence.

The Renault Advantage

Renault has been a pioneer in the EV space for over a decade, with models like the Zoe, Megane E-Tech, and the affordable Dacia Spring gaining traction across Europe. Unlike American automakers, which often emphasize size, power, and range, Renault’s approach leans toward efficiency, affordability, and urban practicality—qualities that align well with the needs of many Canadian drivers.

Moreover, Renault’s EVs use a different supply chain, reducing reliance on American-made components. This independence could prove crucial if trade tensions escalate. By encouraging Renault to establish a stronger presence in Canada—perhaps even through local assembly—Canada could secure a more diversified automotive sector, shielding itself from U.S. policy shifts.

Would Canadians Accept Renault?

Some might argue that Renault’s absence from North America for decades has made the brand irrelevant to Canadian consumers. However, we’ve seen drastic shifts in consumer preferences before. Just a decade ago, EVs were a niche market; today, they are a central pillar of global automotive strategy.

Additionally, Quebec in particular presents a strong potential market for Renault. The province has a history of embracing French culture and European automotive trends. With its generous EV incentives and widespread charging infrastructure, Quebec could serve as a gateway for Renault’s expansion into North America.

A Strategic Shift in Canada’s Automotive Industry

If Canada were to actively invite Renault to establish manufacturing and distribution operations, the impact could be significant. Not only would this foster competition in the EV sector, but it would also provide Canadian consumers with more options beyond Tesla, GM, and Ford. Furthermore, aligning with Renault could open doors for collaboration with other European automakers, reducing dependence on a single market.

Conclusion: A Bold, Yet Feasible, Move

As the EV landscape evolves, Canada faces a choice: remain tethered to American policies, or forge its own path by welcoming alternative manufacturers. Embracing Renault could provide a strategic hedge against U.S. trade unpredictability, while also fostering innovation and competition. In the end, diversifying Canada’s EV market isn’t just about politics—it’s about giving consumers the best possible options for a sustainable, electrified future.

Villepinte 2024: These Motorhome Innovations Will Revolutionize Your Travels!

Have you ever dreamed of an ultramodern van that combines luxury, autonomy, and comfort? Or maybe you’re a road trip enthusiast, always on the lookout for the latest trends to enhance your adventures on the road? If so, get ready to be amazed by the new innovations unveiled at the 2024 Villepinte Van and Motorhome Show! With the growing popularity of converted vehicles, this 2024 edition promises to be a real leap into the future of travel. Will you fall for one of these new releases?

1. The Dream of Total Autonomy Becomes a Reality

In 2024, French manufacturers are making big moves, and electric autonomy is at the forefront of priorities. One standout innovation is an autonomous electric van capable of covering nearly 600 km on a single charge. Imagine setting off on a road trip without ever worrying about gas stations. Vrenelectrique.com already mentioned it: “We’ve all dreamed of a van that runs without polluting,” and this year, it’s finally happening. This van is equipped with a solar system on the roof, which extends the range and even allows partial recharging during the journey. Enough to make vanlife purists green with envy!

2. All-in-One Comfort: An Interior to Dream About

Beyond autonomy, the interior of the new models showcased at the Villepinte Show redefines comfort on the move. Take, for example, the latest model from Pilote, a well-known French brand. They’ve managed to combine spacious living quarters, a fully equipped kitchen, and even a bathroom with a separate shower. And that’s not all: thanks to innovative materials, the vehicle’s weight remains light, which improves energy efficiency and allows for better handling. Perfect for winding roads and narrow country paths!

What blew us away? Smart storage all over the van. No need to sacrifice kitchen or sports gear to save space—everything is optimized so you can take your entire home with you.

3. Design Meets Ecology: The Winning Combo

Ecological concerns are now at the heart of motorhome manufacturers’ priorities, and the 2024 Villepinte Van and Motorhome Show proves it. One of the most eye-catching models uses sustainable and recycled materials for the entire interior, while still maintaining a chic and modern design. This ecological shift reflects the growing concerns of users who care about their environmental impact, without sacrificing comfort or aesthetics.

Among these eco-friendly models is a compact, hypermodern van from Le Voyageur. Thanks to its recycled composite structure and enhanced insulation, it offers incredible energy efficiency. Not to mention the low-consumption LED lighting that adds a modern touch while reducing the carbon footprint.

4. Onboard Technological Innovation: AI Comes to Vans

The Villepinte Show also highlighted the integration of technology in motorhomes, particularly with the arrival of artificial intelligence. Several models now feature voice assistants to control lighting, temperature, or even window shades directly from your smartphone. Some vehicles can even anticipate your needs: adjusting air conditioning based on the outside temperature or activating ventilation as you approach your destination.

The innovative model from Challenger particularly impressed us with its comfort sensors that adapt the interior to your personal preferences, recorded during your previous trips. It’s a new era for connected vanlifers!

5. Affordable Luxury: Comfort Within Everyone’s Reach

We mustn’t forget that vanlife is attracting more and more travelers. In response, several manufacturers have unveiled financially accessible models, while still maintaining a high level of comfort. Far from the exorbitant prices of some luxury motorhomes, brands like Rapido and Adria have presented compact, well-equipped models starting at just €50,000. With these more affordable options, vanlife has never been so accessible.

Imagine traveling without sacrificing comfort, all without blowing your budget. It’s a clear trend at the Villepinte Show: brands want to make vanlife more inclusive and sustainable for as many people as possible.

Conclusion: A Revolution for Road Lovers is Underway

The 2024 Villepinte Van and Motorhome Show proves that the future of road travel is firmly focused on innovation, comfort, and ecology. Whether you’re a road trip enthusiast or just dreaming of discovering vanlife, these new releases are true revolutions on wheels. With incredible technological advances, eco-friendly designs, and models accessible to all budgets, the world of vans and motorhomes has never been so exciting.

So, are you ready to embark on the adventure? Come see these models for yourself and get ready to experience an extraordinary travel journey. Keep an eye on Vrenelectrique.com for the latest developments and tips on this new era of eco-friendly road trips!

Can an electric car be towed behind a motorhome? Unfortunately, the answer is no.

We have researched all electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers and none confirm that this is possible. Looking in more detail, we see that it is because of the way EVs are made.

First, EVs don’t have a transmission that would shift into neutral to free the wheels without running the engines. Also, it is not possible to disconnect the wheels from the motor in any other way.

However, there are alternatives depending on the type of vehicle you use.

You can first use a small platform trailer to install your electric vehicle. This will allow you to tow your vehicle without the 4 wheels turning driving the motors, especially if you have an all-wheel-drive and/or rear-wheel-drive vehicle.

You can also use a “dolly” type tow dolly to remove the front wheels, but on condition that your EV is front-wheel drive.

Avoid using YouYou type tow bars. No VE in 2022 is compatible with this type of hitch.

EV technology is changing very fast! If you discover a compatible EV model that can be towed behind a motorhome, do not hesitate to share this great news with us!

You probably know that charging on the road with a trailer or your RV is not to be taken lightly. Although there are many superchargers for your Tesla, in 2022 in Quebec, there are not yet everywhere! Currently, Superchargers are mainly in major cities and near major highways.

One of the alternatives is obviously to recharge at the campsite at your destination. Unfortunately, not all campsites offer this possibility of charging at level 2 terminals directly on site. You can consult the list of campsites near N2 terminals here on our website: https://rv4ev.ericrousseau.net/liste-de-borne-de-recharge/

Obviously, if you have the TT-30 adapter with your mobile charger, you will be able to charge at 24 amps on your land provided you are not at a rustic campsite without electricity.

Therefore, finding alternatives on the road becomes really important. And this is where the Tesla CHADEMO adapter becomes a must to allow you to connect to the electrical circuit in Quebec.

However, in theory you can’t recharge beyond 50 Kwh with this Tesla CHADEMO adapter, but concretely according to our experience we have never reached more than 37 Kwh. So, with the CHADEMO we are doing well, but we must not be in a hurry.

Fortunately, Tesla has planned for it with a CCS combo adapter that will allow you to connect at higher speeds, and at a better price. Unfortunately, this magic adapter cannot currently be found in Quebec, and little official information is circulating on the availability times in Canada. In addition, if you want to use the CCS combot, you must ensure by checking on your vehicle’s screen that it is compatible. If your vehicle is not compatible, it is possible to change the small computer which is located at the back in the trunk. Several have done this and it works well.

Some groups believe this will be available at the same time Superchargers are available to all other types of electric vehicles. But again, no specific date on this.

If you don’t want to wait, the short-term alternative is to order the famous CCS combo adapter from Korea. However, this purchase is limited to 1 per vehicle serial number. Some “Proxy” companies in Korea allow you to act as a relay between the buyer and Tesla in Korea so that you can order it with your serial number and return it to your home in Quebec.

There may be a fee of approximately $30-60 for relay and delivery plus customs clearance fees. Harumio offers this service, and I personally inquired about the procedures.

To my surprise, to place the order on your behalf, Harumio requires access to your user account and password.

I insisted on asking for an alternative, but unfortunately the company does not offer any other solution.

I know that some will say that we can change our password and reload it afterwards, but personally, I don’t want these people to be able to create an Access Token.

But what is an Access Token? It is a method of logging into your account for the use of third-party applications. For example, ABRP and Teslafi use this type of connection.

I do not like the idea that a company that I do not know, established in another country, can have access to my account. Knowing that she could activate all the features of my vehicle, place orders in my name, with my credit card linked to my account, and even order a vehicle in my name, is too much for me.

Imagine if the company has its email account hacked, the attacker will have access to all the Tesla accounts of Canadians and/or Americans who have not had time to change their passwords, the consequences are significant.

So, it is indeed possible to have a CCS combo in Quebec before everyone else, but at what price?

If you have used other security tips for controlling your CCS combo 1, please let us know, so we can update this blog.

ESTREAM BY AIRSTREAM: THE TRUE DEFINITION OF SUSTAINABLE AND ECO-FRIENDLY MOBILE LIFE.

During the 21st century, we have witnessed many technological advancements in different fields. From cell phones to laptops to cars. Now we are finally seeing a whole new level of advancements in the travel trailer industry. Not that the amazing big brands make it possible to be one step ahead of that curve. Airstream a new eStream concept that, with its battery-electric powertrain, looks like the thrilling electric camping trailer of the future.

Airstream’s new self-propelled electric camping trailer: eStream, offers a solution to a variety of problems. After Tesla released the Model X SUV, the company was motivated to design a trailer that could automatically pull its own weight.

In all honesty, the eStream is powerful with lots of features, but I’ll try to stick to the unique features that set it apart from the rest.

AMAZING BATTERY AND GREAT CHARGING EXPERIENCE

Large-scale lithium batteries are installed on the eStream. These batteries have a storage capacity of up to 80 kilowatt hours of energy. With automotive technology and automotive balance batteries, stored power can be used to extend your off-grid journey. There is enough power for all systems to run smoothly, for an extended period of up to 2 weeks off-grid. When it comes to charging, its 22ft size allows it to fit into a standard EV charging point, meaning you don’t have to worry much about available charging infrastructure. Its high voltage systems also allow for a faster and longer lasting charging process.

FULLY ELECTRONIC AND AUTOMATED USER EXPERIENCE

The eSteam is fully electrified in that it contains batteries that store 80 kilowatt hours of energy. This power is supplied to a pair of electric motors (one at each wheel) which can produce a combined output of 242 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. These electric motors do more than just relieve some of the stress on the towed vehicle’s transmission; they also include a ‘Move Mode’ which allows the eStream to move on its own. In low speed conditions, the eStream can also drive itself. This feature allows you to control the trailer remotely using your smartphone during low-speed operations such as hitching and unhitching, reversing into a parking lot, and moving a campsite . This feature helps relieve much of the stress associated with using and managing a camping trailer.

The eStream’s hitch contains sensors that tell the electric motors how much assistance to provide, ensuring the trailer doesn’t drag behind the tow vehicle. Additionally, the trailer brakes automatically, using the motors regenerative braking as they recharge the batteries. Electronic stability control is also provided by the drive system, which prevents the trailer from wobbling. Additionally, the heavy battery in the trailer floor provides a low center of gravity, which combines with the electric drive system’s stability control to eliminate the need for a weight-distributing hitch.

Although not much is known about the interior devices, the eStream can however boast of a powerful digital experience with an interior design filled with electrical appliances ranging from heaters to air conditioning to bathroom systems as well as room for the use of artificial intelligence, for example Alexa from Amazon.

SUSTAINABILITY AND ECOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS

One very important thing to note about the eStream is its durable and eco-friendly nature. The trailer being less bulky and fully electric means zero concerns for C02 emissions. However, this consideration extends to the tow vehicle. When towed with an EV, its automotive technology and power allow it to be towed with less energy, extending the range of your EV. And if towed with a traditional internal combustion engine, there will be a significant reduction in fuel consumption. Although still in the works, when it does launch the eStream is sure to encourage more people to go 100% electric green camping.

It is not new that owners install trailer hitches on combustion (gasoline) vehicles not approved by the manufacturer. Electric vehicles are no exception to this habit.

Sometimes trailer hitches are used for bicycle hitching or for luggage boxes, but also for towing a small trailer on occasion.

But beware, although companies may manufacture and sell suggested trailer hitches for certain vehicles not approved for towing, in the event of a problem, the dealer of your electric vehicle could refuse a repair under warranty.

If in doubt, don’t! So, wait until your vehicle’s warranty is over so you don’t take any risks.

We have identified the electric vehicles below based on the availability of EcoHitch™ brand trailer hitches. Some are also available at https://www.alxmic.com/, a Quebec supplier.

So here is the list we have identified for you to tow.

As these vehicles are not authorized to tow according to their manufacturers, the towing capacity of these vehicles is rather difficult to know exactly. This is why the capacities below are those of the trailer hitch and not of the vehicle.

Where are we with electric trailers?

As you have seen in our previous articles, transporting a trailer using an electric vehicle has a price. This price is a reduction of almost half the autonomy of the vehicle. This reality therefore requires preparation, vigilance and unparalleled organization to ensure optimal and safe travel. Impossible to ignore that this can sometimes be a real headache. Good news, the arrival of electric trailers on the market is now upon us! Let’s see how this will impact us.

German RV manufacturer Dethleffs tested a potential new solution by designing the E.Home trailer. A trailer with two electric motors and its own batteries to assist the towing vehicle. The E.Home uses its two electric motors to accelerate in symbiosis with the towing vehicle. Under the trailer there are two 40 kW batteries and two motors each with a maximum power of 90 kW (121 horsepower) and a continuous power of 30 kW (40 horsepower).

Last month, Dethleffs put his E.Home trailer to the test by driving a 390 km route, using an Audi E-Tron Sportback SUV, through the Alps. A route very popular with European caravan owners. According to the EPA, the Audi E-Tron has a range of 330 km. Result? The Audi vehicle towed the trailer without reloading it for the entire trip, which lasted more than 6 hours at normal speed. The system is designed to provide acceleration equivalent to what the car alone would normally provide. The configuration is calibrated in order to improve the stability of the vehicle and the trailer.

We are talking with E.Home about a future proof of concept, since the latter is not yet legal in Europe. However, several pilot projects held by German trailer companies are underway and supported by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, thus leading us to believe that their arrival on the European notes is coming soon!

For America, Dethleffs has not confirmed anything regarding his presence. Luckily for us, American trailer company Airstream announced plans to design electric trailers earlier this year. Airstream says it is experimenting with attaching an electric motor to the trailer’s axle to provide additional driving force, while refining the aerodynamics to make the trailers lighter and sleeker. This two-pronged approach promises to reduce fuel consumption and improve driving dynamics so drivers no longer have to haul a heavy, bulky trailer.

Another model that has the market buzzing is the “Boulder” by Colorado Teardrops. It has a bank of batteries integrated into the frame of the trailer, which allows the electric vehicle to be charged at full autonomy. The difference with the models above is that this one is already on presale at a cost of 55,000 USD.
